LifeMax EMG Clinical Workshop 2012
Todd Shewman is the Research Director of Noraxon US A Inc. As a therapist he has comprehensive experience in the clinical use of Surface Electromyography in Canada and the USA. Mr. Shewman is perhaps best known for his publication “Surface Electromyography in Temporomandibular Dysfunction”.
Some recent publications related to Surface EMG includes a study module for the APTA’s Section on Women’s Health to give practising physical therapists a working knowledge of surface electromyography (SEMG) instrumentation. He has extensive experience speaking to clinicians and researchers both nationally and internationally on topics incorporating various measurement technologies in dental, orthopaedic, neurological, pain management, sports medicine and work injury settings .
Introduction to SEMG and clinical relevance - Introduction to SEMG, physiologic Rationale and Clinical relevance SEMG instrumentation, basic processing principles, advantages and limitations of SEMG. SEMG Exploration Lab (skin prep of bicep only, apply electrodes, explore various contractions, isometric, fast, slow, test in normal range, lengthened and shortened ranges). Normalization for both Cervical and shoulder regional applications (lecture/lab hands on) - Brief Overview of literature, proposed assessment and documentation strategies, case presentation. Lab - skin preparation (review) and electrode placement lab for recording sites. Lab/hands on of assessment techniques.
Low back/hip/knee regional applications (lecture) - Brief Overview of literature, proposed assessment and documentation strategies, case presentation. Low back/hip/knee regional applications (lab) - skin preparation (review) and electrode placement lab for recording sites. Lab/hands on of assessment techniques. Dosage and position considerations (lecture/lab) - Dosage and position considerations (Lecture) unloading situations, transfer from exercise to functional activity with and without SEMG feedback.
Review of assessment and feedback techniques - a review of what was presented the day prior. Feedback and therapeutic exercise (lab) - Proprioceptive Feedback techniques (Postural Training, activation recognition, discrimination and deactivation training). Cervical, Shoulder, low back, knee and hip Feedback with therapeutic Exercise (each region with assigned exercises and exploration lab)
Case study – go through process of data collection, brief information of processing of data (for both clinicians and researchers), analysis of data and interpretation of results. Information for researchers regarding testing in a research environment (different to clinical). Information based on the results as to how the clinician would report the findings to the doctor.
Outcomes of the course:
Demonstrate understanding of the physiological basis of SEMG.
Demonstrate understanding of the limitations of SEMG recording techniques.
Learn and demonstrate basic SEMG recording and feedback techniques.
Learn and demonstrate basic SEMG feedback techniques applied to therapeutic exercise.
